Well, gang – while we sat indoors here in the gloomy North watching a steady rain, Team Denkert, consisting of Brooke Denkert, Wade Davis and Capt. Dave Denkert as their guide, clinched their bid to win the Redbone tarpon tournament today.
Here’s a portion of the report issued by ESPN Outdoors this evening:
DUCK KEY, Fla. – Brooke Denkert of Islamorada, Fla., was only permitted to leave the awards stage in spurts Sunday so that she could put down one award and come back to receive the next.
The 23-year-old Denkert, teammate Wade Davis of West Palm Beach, and their guide Dave Denkert, Brooke’s father, were named the Grand Champion Team of the two-day Redbone Sunrise/Sunset Tarpon Tourney at Hawk’s Cay Resort, claiming the prize with 900 points overall for nine tarpon caught on live crab.
Along with the team award, Brooke’s catch of five tarpon for the tournament – three during sunrise fishing Saturday and two during Saturday’s sunset session – earned her the Grand Champion Angler award. She also won the Lady Angler Grand Champion category.
We will be talking with Brooke Denkert this week on Outdoors Radio. You can listen on one of our 11 broadcast stations this weekend, or catch the show online sometime on Wednesday. I spoke with Brooke this afternoon, and she was pretty excited about winning the tournament – and who wouldn’t be? This gal has been fishing competitively – and winning – since high school, which was only a few years ago.
Now, we don’t normally cover tarpon fishing in the Keys on Outdoors Radio or Blog The Road, but this story sounded so compelling, I just had to share it. Besides, we’re on sort of a tarpon roll now, having talked to Roger LaPenter about his Mexico trip in show 416, then to Ward Torke about his Caribbean trip in Show 417. We gave tarpon a rest for Show 418, but you won’t want to miss our conversation with Brooke this week.
