Just about ready to call it a night, when I got an email from ESPN Outdoor News about a tarpon tournament in the Florida Keys. Although I’m about to head off to New York for a turkey hunt, the message brought back some memories and a little bit of longing for another trip to Marathon Key for a go at the silver kings.
The message said the father-daughter teacm of Dave and Brooke Denkert, of Islamorada, are leading the two-day Redbone @ Large Sunrise/Sunset Tarpon Tourney at Hawk’s Cay Resort in the Florida Keys with six tarpon boated. Man, boating one or two tarpon is a good day, but six?
And Brooke caught five of them! All on live crabs.
To read about the tournament, log onto ESPN.com, but don’t get lost in all the hype about the NFL draft.
Brooke is apparently quite the gal. She’s a grad student in estuary ecology at Florida Gulf Coast U. Go ahead and Google her. I expect we’ll be hearing a lot more from her in the years to come.
Best of luck to Team Denkert for another solid day tomorrow and a win.
